The journey from Cubic City to Erinite Village had been a lot quicker than in reverse. Without complications, Ferrin and Tawnee had arrived within the second town by the end of the first day, hot and weary from the road. She had wanted to keep going straight to the swamps. When she had returned to Ferrin after her visit to the pokemon laboratory, Tawnee had eagerly explained to Ferrin about the quest that had been listed on a bulletin board. It was a request from the professor herself- one with a surprisingly wonderful reward. After being told she couldn't be given a starter pokemon due to capturing a wild pokemon, the girl had been eager to return to malachite swamps in order to seek out the pokemon the professor sought after.

Of course, Ferrin wanted to rest in Erinite for a few days and after a bit of a stubborn disagreement, the pair decided to stay in Erinite. But, Tawnee would go out the next day and find the requested pokemon. That morning she'd awoken and eaten with a jubilant excitement that surprised her companion- who was used to seeing her in a grumpy mood in the morning. Tawnee had set out after breakfast with the promise to return to their hostel room in time for dinner.

She'd been walking for hours now. Torin watched the surrounding grasses of the swamp with beady eyes as he sniffed disdainfully, < "Rude. The great Goo- I mean, The Great Torin has been gone less than a week and these... these... interlopers come and invade my turf." > The small dragon-type whined pathetically and looked up at his trainer with a pout, < "It's all your fault." > He went on to grumble about her incapability as a trainer, producing a sigh from the "blue snake" coiled on her shoulders.

< "Stop complaining, you agreed to come with us." > Corra's silken voice filled the air softly and she returned to her position nestled within her trainer's hair. < "I think we should go right." > She mumbled to Tawnee and the girl turned to take the path leading to the right. It wound through a coupling of trees before reaching a dead end at the edge of the swamp. The dragon sighed in frustration, < "I'm taking a nap." >

Tawnee sighed and then tapped on her pocket lightly, "Hey Rotom, what are we looking for again?" The teenager asked with a small smile as the bright red machine floated up and greeted her with a series of robotic noises before giggling in delight at its cleverness.

"Hi, Tawnee! Professor Pine is seeking a Tympole." The rotom-dex spun around and an image of the small blue pokemon appeared on its screen. "Tympole are classified as the tadpole pokemon. They use the rhythms created by their cheeks to talk to one another- though, you can't hear them!" The buzzing sounds returned as the rotom announced it's glee at the aspect. "Cool, huh!" It chirped before disappearing back into Tawnee's pocket without another word.

The trainer looked around carefully after the rotom had disappeared and a frown touched her features, "This might be harder than I thought then."

A FORK IN THE ROAD APPEARS!

The smell of the swamps, especially at this time of day, is especially repugnant. It's almost as if the sun is baking the polluted water and you've found yourself trapped inside the oven. Nevertheless, you are here on a quest today with a goal in mind. And although you've been warned that it will not be easy - in fact, it will be hard - the professor sure does appreciate your help.

Finding a teeny-tiny Tympole in this vast expanse of marshlands is a daunting task, given that dangers and unforeseeable circumstances are waiting behind every tree stump and under every rock. Your first choice comes now as your turn away from the dead end your Dratini has led you to. You've come to the ever cliche fork in the road. On the left are reflective signs leading into a wooded area, meant to tell you that the swamp is less deep down this path. On the right is visible water, meaning you'll have to do some wading; by your best guess, it should only come up to your knees, but you can never know for sure until you're in it.

What will you decide?

The teenage girl turned away from the dead end with a shrug of her shoulders. Shrugging caused the dratini around her neck to yawn and coil tighter, not that Tawnee minded terribly. Corra was at least protecting her neck from the harsh rays of sunlight. The smell of the swampy water only grew worse with the heat from the sun and Tawnee turned up her nose in disgust for a moment before continuing on her way. As she came to the fork in the road she hesitated, momentarily, before, in a typical show of determination, Tawnee chose the path leading into the water to the right.

Sure enough, the girl sank first to her knees, the cool water almost felt refreshing- if not for the smell. Tawnee trudged forward several paces, only to sink once more to her waist. < "Girl," > Torin's voice drifted like a bubble popping and filled the seventeen-year-old's ears. < "Perhaps you should exercise more caution out here." > Just because she'd taken him from his home didn't mean he wanted to watch her drown in the murky water. < "I'm not here anymore to keep the riff-raff out." > He decided against explaining himself and sniffed with a twinge of irritation.

"You worry too much, don't you, Torin?" Tawnee mumbled as she slowly moved through the thick water. She could feel her boots grow heavier as the water began to fill them and weigh her down. The mud sucked beneath the surface at her legs, threatening to trap her if she didn't move faster. The teen lifted the goomy to her head and placed him delicately on top of her head. "Hold on, Torin~ I need my arms!" She bubbled at him as her face heated to a flushed red. Using her arms now, she skirted across the water at a quicker pace, her eyes peeled for any movement.

A WILD GRIMER APPEARS!

LEVEL: ???

ATTACKS: ?, ?, ?, ?

The decision to go right and enter the wading swamp waters is a sound one. It makes sense that if you are looking for a tadpole Pokemon you must get a little wet. What you weren't counting on, though, was for the waters to get progressively deeper as you went on. That was the thing about swamps--the depth crept on you so suddenly that it was hard to realize when you were out of yours.

The water travels up your knees until you're waist-deep in it. You move your Pokemon to higher ground, your head, in hopes of using your arms to propel you. The mud underneath is making it harder and harder to march forward, and you find the suction on your boots troublesome.

Then, you take one step and the squish underneath your boot is different this time. It's more gooey than the mud you've been walking through. If you try to pull back now, you just might lose your boot;whatever you've stepped in has got you good. That's when you see two eyes open wide through the murky waters before you, and you realize you've stomped on a wild Grimer. Her body rises up and now you're face to face, your foot still inside her. She doesn't look particularly pleased. What's the big idea?

How are you going to handle this one?

Tawnee's decision was a justified one, to say the least, and as she sank into the murky water she held no regrets. The water, although it smelled foul, was cooling to her exhaustive efforts of movement. Torin's weight caused her neck to hurt, but she ignored the pain in order to paddle forward, her toes barely skimming the ground of the marsh now as she went deeper and deeper into the swamp. A sickening squelch, however, alerted her as her leg began to rise from the surface of the water and the teen was thrown off-balance by a set of eyes and an amorphous blob.

The grimer took Tawnee by surprise, who shouted in shock as she fell into the marsh and had to prop herself up with her arms straight behind her. She stared for a moment at the grimer, before the realization that Torin's weight had left her head sunk in. "Torin!" Tawnee cried in surprise and pulling her booted foot from the grimer's belly, she turned wildly to find her pokemon. Corra clung to her neck, though, glared in disgust at the angry blob of disturbed grimer. Torin was nowhere to be seen. "Torin!" His trainer yelled in worry.

Suddenly, he came surging from the depths of the murky water and flowed towards the grimer with an enraged yell. The small soft-tissue pokemon growled from the water, his beady eyes glaring at the grimer now free from his trainer's foot, < "Who are you? Why did you attack us? Get out of my swamp! Or you'll be sorry." > His voice bubbled over the surface of the water and his eyes narrowed as he charged at the grimer with a warning tackle. Much to Tawnee's horror.

A WILD GRIMER APPEARS!

LEVEL: 8

ATTACKS: Poison Gas, Harden, ?, ?

Grimer did not appreciate being stepped on--er, in. She appreciated your Goomy's threat and tackle even less. Now, she's made up in her mind that it's her job to teach you lot a lesson about respect and personal boundaries.

Think it's okay to mess with me, huh? she asks with a wince, her body jiggling from the impact of Goomy's tackle. Well think again! In a large huff, the Grimer opens her mouth and then exhales a noxious cloud of dark gray poison that swallows the area whole. She has seemingly little regard for any three of you; her attack is uncaring about who falls ill.

Then, in the shadow of it all, her body stiffens up in anticipating of retaliation from that overzealous Goomy.

Tawnee had very little experience with pokemon battles- but, she didn't need the experience to know she was in some serious trouble with this grimer. The dark gray poison that wafted around the grimer was enough to sting the young woman's eyes and make her cough into the crook of her elbow as she looked for Torin. The goomy had disappeared in the veil of gas and despite Corra's urging that he'd be alright, Tawnee worried for the well-being of her pokemon.

It didn't take long for the gases to cover her and for the dratini on her shoulders to shriek with concern. Tawnee pulled the collar of her shirt up to cover her nose and mouth, exposing her torso to the poison instead. Just as she thought she was about to pass out, the water behind the grimer surged upward and a flurry of bubbles rose from the water before changing direction and falling upon the grimer's location like so many meteors. Tawnee watched in astonishment as the little goomy leaped out of the water, the bubbles falling from his tiny mouth without stopping. Impressed with the small creature's determination, Tawnee whooped.

Only then, did the trainer remember she was still sitting in the brackish water. However, her legs refused to work to move her. They needed to put a stop to this grimer fast. "Torin! Switch it up with absorb!" She shouted in between coughing hysterics, she couldn't take this poison much longer. The pokemon eagerly shouted back at his trainer before a beam of red light showered from his mouth and attempted to land upon the grimer. If the grimer was unfortunate enough to get hit by the red light, they'd feel a drain on their energy as the goomy absorbed their health for his own gain.

A WILD GRIMER APPEARS!

LEVEL: 8

ATTACKS: Poison Gas, Harden, Pound, ?

Grimer's poisonous gas was intended to put her opponents - especially that Goomy - out of commission. Unfortunately, she gets the feeling that her gas is doing more damage to the girl than it is to the dragon-type. She looks around in the cloud of her own doing, looking for the target again, and is surprised by the bubbles that come raining down on her form. Pop after pop, she is pummeled by the attack and takes damage.

Before the Absorb attack could land, Grimer sank back down into the swamp water with Tawnee. Then, she attempted to move unseen toward her opponent. Once she was close enough, she burst forth from the smelly marshes with a glowing fist. This'll teach you not to bully people! she cries before taking a swing at Goomy.

It seems that Grimer has really taken offense to the perceived disrespect you and your Pokemon have shown her since meeting. Perhaps she can be placated with a little humility? Then again, the damage might have already been done. It's up to you to decide how this altercation is going to end.

Tawnee felt light-headed by the effects of the poison gas. Did full heals work on humans? She watched her pokemon as he executed the absorb, only to see the grimer disappear beneath the surface of the murky water. Torin plopped back into the water and looked around in absolute confusion for the purple blob. Tawnee too desperately looked around. Even the dratini perched on her shoulder tried to pinpoint the location in the haze that permeated the water top. For a long heartbeat- which in reality was probably only a few seconds, all of them waited and searched.

The grimer rose behind goomy and her powerful attack sent the amorphous blob flying forward towards the trainer. She cried in shock as she caught the goomy and looked in stunned disbelief at the poison-type pokemon. "Wait!" Tawnee shouted, surging to her feet in a rush of water. "I'm sorry, Grimer!" She cried, turning her back to the grimer and cradling her pokemon close to her chest.

Torin whimpered softly and burrowed his head into her chest, < "She hits hard!"

"I didn't mean to step on you!" Corra leaned off of her trainer's shoulders and stared at the grimer before them as her trainer tried to plead her case. The dratini's eyes narrowed and she blinked slowly to try and remain as non-aggressive as possible. This grimer clearly assumed her trainer was in the wrong for this mishap- and that foolish Torin hadn't helped the case. Perhaps she could aide in diffusing the situation.

< "Please, my trainer speaks sense!" > The blue snake-like pokemon reasoned sensibly. Tawnee looked over her shoulder, protecting her cowering goomy, who'd clearly bitten off more than he could chew in attacking the grimer.

A WILD GRIMER APPEARS!

Grimer inhales again, preparing to exhale another round of gas, but stops herself when she sees your crew apologizing for your actions. When the Dratini speaks, she decides to give you all the benefit of the doubt. She doesn't want to believe you all are double-crossers, even though you've given her no reason to believe you anything but rude. Call it a swamp miracle.

Be more careful, and watch where you're going. Her words aren't minced because this Pokemon is not one for games. Where are you going, anyway? Cluing Grimer in on your mission might not be such a bad idea--she does know the terrain, and Tympoles are hard to find so some help could be welcome. Then again, it might be a terrible idea--she could be friends with the Tympole in this swamp and not want to see them captured for experimentation.

You've been doing fine so far on your own, and Torin knows these parts too. Which option will you choose: disclose your mission to Grimer, or keep the information to yourself and be on your way?

The serious way that the grimer spoke made Tawnee visibly stiffen as she turned to face the pokemon once more. The toxic pokemon certainly was curious- considering the fight they'd had the teen wasn't entirely certain she trusted the grimer. With a smile that matched the tone the grimer had set, the girl bowed graciously at the hip, "Begging your pardon again for stepping on you, Grimer. I'll be on my way then~!" Tawnee said the words quickly and didn't particularly give the pokemon much time to respond to her words before trudging through the water towards where Torin had mentioned there might be water pokemon.

He whispered hoarsely, < "But I don't know anymore! Things are too different!" > The dramatic dragon-type huffed and sniffed in the direction of the grimer, < "Why don't we just ask her." >

< "Because she might warn them or lead us astray." > Corra responded coldly and looked at her trainer stoically, < "Tawnee, I don't suggest asking the-" >

Tawnee turned around and returned to where she'd left the sludge pokemon. "Excuse me, but have you seen any water types nearby?" She asked as vaguely and politely as possible, bowing her head. Her dratini only rolled her eyes and shook her head before looking at the grimer as well. Torin peered at her from his position in Tawnee's arms, though he dared not make eye-contact with the grimer- she packed a hell-of-a punch.

A WILD GRIMER APPEARS!

Your words take the Grimer by surprise. Why you need help finding water-Pokemon in a swamp of all places is beyond her. But, if helping you means she gets to return to her nap soon she's willing to help out. Yes. I'm friends with a water-type, she tells you before beginning to drag her sludgy body off in that direction. But he's shy, so I'd have to introduce you.

The direction she would have you go is back away from the deeper water. Should you chose to follow Grimer, you'll comfortably be only ankle-deep in water again. However, you can justifiably tell Grimer that you don't need her help and continue to explore the deeper waters that you're already swimming in. It's up to you: search on your own in waist-deep water, or let Grimer lead you to her friend?

When the grimer responded positively to her question the teenager released the breath she hadn't been aware of holding. However, the grimer left the pool of waist-deep water and moved into ankle-deep water that seemed to be more reliable as far as traversing was concerned. For a moment she hesitated, Corra whispering frantically in her ear to turn around and reconsider. < "We'll find one without her help." > The dragon-type hissed adamantly, her frustration evident in the ticking of her tail. While she was content to appease the grimer to save face, Corra was against the idea of charging after a wild pokemon into the swamps!

Tawnee frowned, but before she could speak in defense of the purple sludge Torin popped up and shoved his face into the dratini's with enough force to knock the dratini back and make her lose her place on the coordinator's shoulders. < "I'm lost!" > He admitted finally and glared in the direction of the grimer's back, < "If she were leading us into a trap she'd take us deeper into the water." > Torin's voice was begrudging as he nodded to his trainer from her arms.

Tawnee sighed, "There are no questions about it. We're following Grimer." With that certainty, the girl waded to the ankle-deep water and followed after the grimer. "If I may be so bold, what kind of pokemon is your friend, Ms. Grimer?" The teen hoped she was being kind and polite enough to encourage this pokemon to reveal more information. Which, if she was lucky, the Grimer would be taking her to a tympole.

A WILD GRIMER APPEARS!

The question didn't quite make sense to Grimer, the one about what kind of Pokemon her friend was. Perhaps the sophistication with which human trainers classified Pokemon with names, types, and evolution stages was a bit much to expect an unlearned, wild Grimer like her to comprehend. I told you, he's a water-type. Isn't that what you asked for? she responds, continuing to lead you into shallower and shallower waters. It looks like you'll just have to see when you get there.

Eventually, after following Grimer for a couple of minutes, you're not even in water anymore. Now, you find yourself walking across a firm-ish layer of mud, littered green from algae and purple from pollution. This new quasi-terra firma is probably a relief for your water-logged boots and soaked pants legs. If you're attentive, though, you'll notice there are a pair of footprints in the mud that were not made by you: they're at least double the size of your own feet and travel perpendicularly to the path you find yourself on right now.

You can conclude that you're not the only human meandering around these swamps right now, but you have no idea why anyone else would be out here. Grimer promises that you're almost to her friend's nest, but is it more important to find out where this set of tracks leads? The swamps are only so big; you'll probably run into whoever it is eventually anyways.

As Tawnee trudged after the Grimer she had to set Corra and Torin both down to walk on their own. The weather had seemed to grow hotter as they walked out of the ankle deep water and onto the less boggy ground. Happy to have land beneath her feet again the young woman sighed in relief despite the protesting ache in her heels. When Grimer answered her question it wasn't quite what she was looking for- the girl bit her lip carefully, worried that she might have given away something about her objection here. She wasn't entirely certain whether or not the sludge pokemon was really leading them in the appropriate direction.

When a pair of footprints crossed their path going perpendicular to them Tawnee paused and frowned as she looked at the prints. The young woman realized they weren't quite alone at that very moment. She dared to ask the grimer how much longer, as she rushed to her side and was reassured that they would reach the water-type's nest soon. With a sigh, because she couldn't necessarily argue with their guide, the girl nodded and continued to follow the grimer. In a small area like this she was bound to run into the other trainer at some point- so why waste her good fortune in looking for them.

As they continued to walk, however, Tawnee grew nervous. "Hey, Grimer- do you think your friend will want to come with me?" She asked with a tilt of her head. Realistically, the girl was just concerned that taking a pokemon from its home would seem like a Team Rocket thing to do. She really didn't want to be like them. "I mean, do they have dreams of leaving this swamp at some point?" Her questions were serious and she looked at the grimer quizzically.
